A port cellar tour with Fado at the end

Cálem is one of Porto’s biggest port-wine houses, with cellars on the Vila Nova de Gaia waterfront directly across the Douro from Ribeira. The 75-minute experience here combines the standard guided cellar tour — port history, ageing barrels, the difference between Tawny and Ruby — with a live Fado concert at the end, served alongside two port wines to taste.

The cellar tour part runs in groups of 15–25, with a guide explaining how port is made and aged. After the tour, you’re seated in the tasting hall for the Fado set: usually a fadista with Portuguese guitar and classical guitar, performing about half an hour of traditional repertoire. The two port wines tasted during the show are a white port (light, served chilled) and a special-reserve red.

Free cancellation is generous here — up to 3 days before, rather than the more common 24 hours. The official venue website is tour.calem.pt.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the Fado with port — the two singers were superb and I loved the guitars. The building is stunning. Would highly recommend.

An interesting tour with one of the larger houses in Porto. The historical information alongside modern production methods was useful. The included Fado show was provided by a professional team of singers and musicians.

The tour was engagingly led, and the cellars are atmospheric and impressive. We loved the Fado show with the port tasting. Excellent value for money and a memorable experience.

Emma · United Kingdom · April 2026

Very informative tour. The Fado show at the end was a great way to finish. My only dislike was the size of the tour group and the fast pace of the tour guide — for the price, would still recommend.

A small heads-up before you book

  • A few travelers say hearing the guide can be hard in larger tour groups — Cálem runs groups of 15–25. Try to position yourself close to the guide during the cellar tour part for the best audio.
  • The 18:00 cellar tour (Nov–Mar) or 18:30 (Apr–Oct) is the start time for the combined ticket — arriving a few minutes earlier helps with check-in at the busy reception.
  • Cálem is on the Gaia side of the river. After the show, the walk back across the Luís I Bridge upper deck is one of Porto’s best evening views — bring a light jacket in cooler months.
FAQ

Common questions

How long is the Fado part of the experience?
The full ticket runs 75 minutes total: roughly 30–40 minutes of cellar tour, then a port tasting and a live Fado set of about 30 minutes in the tasting hall. The two parts run back-to-back without a break.
How big is the tour group?
Group size varies but is typically 15–25 people for the cellar tour part. The Fado seating that follows happens in a larger tasting hall — even with a full tour, everyone hears the music well.
Do I need to speak Portuguese?
No. The cellar tour and the Fado introductions are in English. The Fado songs themselves are in Portuguese, with short English context between songs — typical for any Fado venue.
How do I get to Cálem?
Av. de Diogo Leite 344 is on the Vila Nova de Gaia waterfront, directly across the river from Ribeira. The quickest route is across the lower deck of the Luís I Bridge from Ribeira — 10 minutes on foot. Metro line D (yellow) stops at Jardim do Morro, also a 5-minute walk.
Can I bring children?
Children are welcome on the cellar tour and the Fado show. The port tasting is for adults — children get juice or water. Children pay a reduced ticket; check the exact age on the booking page.
Can I cancel my ticket?
Cálem allows free cancellation up to 3 days before — more generous than most Porto Fado shows. The exact policy appears at the checkout step on each platform.
Which platform should I book on — GetYourGuide or Tiqets?
Either is fine. GetYourGuide has the larger review pool for this venue (3,700+ reviews); Tiqets is direct and clean. Prices are the same on both. Pick whichever account you already have.
