What makes this show different

  • 1Set inside an actual Portuguese-guitar workshop — the instruments around you are the ones being made.
  • 2Two musicians, one fadista — classical guitar, Portuguese guitar, voice. No amplification, no microphones.
  • 3About twelve songs in an hour, glass of port wine included with every ticket.
  • 4Six minutes on foot from São Bento station; you walk in under the Luís I Bridge to get here.

A small room and three working musicians

Casa da Guitarra is the only place in Porto that builds and exhibits handmade Portuguese string instruments — the Portuguese guitar, mandolin and viola. The shop sits on Avenida Vímara Peres, the road that runs above the Luís I Bridge, six minutes on foot from São Bento station. Every evening at 18:00 and 19:30 the showroom becomes the concert room: chairs are arranged for forty people, the doors close, and the show begins.

This is, by the venue’s own description, the first Fado concert in show format in Porto — led by a luthier who is also the Portuguese-guitar expert in the room. The hour mixes a live concert with short explanations about Fado and the instruments, a glass of port wine in the interval, and time at the end to look at the exhibition of handmade guitars.

Note that the show is not recommended for children under six, and the concert room is not wheelchair-accessible. The official venue website is portofado.com.

Fantastic — both the singers and the musicians were amazing. My only criticism is it wasn’t long enough! The acoustics and the building were brilliant, and the collection of instruments on show was very interesting, so give yourself time to see them. Highly recommended.

Beautiful experience. A must-see for anyone visiting Porto. Genuine acoustic delivery at its best.

William · South Africa · May 2026

Absolutely amazing. Incredibly powerful and heartfelt singing, and the musical accompaniment was just perfect. We loved the atmosphere — and the port wine midway through the performance was delicious. The history of Fado on the posters throughout the building was a lovely touch.

We loved this. Very entertaining, just the right length, centrally located, and a lovely insight into Portuguese folk music. It felt like an authentic experience, not just something for tourists.

A small heads-up before you book

  • A few travelers mention they’d have liked more spoken context between the songs in English — the format is concert-first, with light introductions rather than a guided commentary.
  • Seating is unallocated. Arriving 10–15 minutes before the start gets you a good seat; the front row fills first.
  • The room is not wheelchair-accessible and the show is not recommended for children under six — both confirmed by the venue.
FAQ

Common questions

Do I need to speak Portuguese to enjoy the show?
No. The songs are in Portuguese — that’s essential to Fado — but the musicians give short introductions in English between songs, explaining what each lyric is about. Most international visitors say the language barrier doesn’t get in the way of the emotion.
How early should I arrive?
Doors open about 20 minutes before the show. Seats are unallocated — first come, first seated — and the front row fills quickly. Arriving 15 minutes early gets you a good seat and time for the port wine.
Can I bring children?
Yes, the venue is family-friendly. Children pay the same ticket price as adults. Fado is acoustic and contemplative, so it suits children old enough to sit through a 60-minute concert.
Is there food?
No, this is a concert-only format with port wine — not a dinner show. If you’d like Fado with a Portuguese dinner, look at the Mesa de Frades or Cálem Cellars options on our Lisbon and Porto hubs.
How do I get there from the centre of Porto?
It’s a five-to-eight minute walk from São Bento railway station — head down towards the river and the Luís I Bridge; Avenida Vímara Peres is the road that runs above the bridge. From Ribeira riverside it’s about three minutes uphill.
Can I cancel my ticket?
Both GetYourGuide and Tiqets typically allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before the show. The exact policy appears at the checkout step on each platform — please double-check before completing the booking.
Which platform should I book on — GetYourGuide or Tiqets?
Either is fine. GetYourGuide has the larger review pool for this venue and a slightly more international checkout flow; Tiqets is direct and clean. Prices are the same on both. Pick whichever account you already have.
