What makes this show different

  • 1The only Porto Fado show with a host who explains each song before it’s sung, in your language.
  • 2Audio guide available in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese — choose at the door.
  • 3Hear both Lisbon and Coimbra Fado styles in a single one-hour show.
  • 4Glass of Tawny port wine paired with the performance.

A commented hour of two Fado traditions

Fado na Baixa runs on Rua de São João, right at the top of Porto’s Ribeira quarter and a few minutes from the river. The format is different from most Porto Fado venues: instead of just performing, the host introduces each song before it’s sung — explaining what the lyric is about, when it was written, and which Fado tradition it belongs to.

This is the only Porto venue we’ve found that programmes both Lisbon Fado and Coimbra Fado in one show. The Lisbon repertoire is the more familiar one (UNESCO heritage, traditional taverns); the Coimbra tradition comes from the university and is sung only by men, in a different rhythm. Hearing both back-to-back is a fast way to understand how they differ.

An audio guide is available in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese — you can choose at the door if you want extra context during the show. A glass of Tawny port wine is included. The official venue website is fadonabaixa.com.

It was a great experience. The show was very enjoyable, with a nice and short introduction about Fado and its history. The artists were excellent and the performance was very emotional.

I am absolutely thrilled with this Fado concert experience! The performance was deeply emotional, authentic, and incredibly moving. The singer and musicians were outstanding.

Mauro · Italy · February 2026

The musicians were exceptional! As a guitar player I was fascinated by the skill of the Portuguese guitar player. It was great learning the history of the instrument and of the traditions of Fado across Portugal.

Jody · United States · February 2026

Highly recommend this Fado show! An amazing experience from start to finish. The singer was outstanding, and the clever mix of storytelling with singing helped us connect with the music.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need to speak Portuguese to enjoy the show?
No — this is the most accessible Porto Fado show for non-Portuguese speakers. The host introduces every song in your language, and an audio guide is available in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.
What’s the difference between Lisbon and Coimbra Fado?
Lisbon Fado is the UNESCO-heritage tavern tradition — sung by men and women, often about love and saudade. Coimbra Fado comes from the university and is sung only by men, traditionally as students serenading at night. The set here lets you hear both.
How do I get there?
R. de São João 99 is at the top of Ribeira, a 6-minute walk down from São Bento railway station. From the riverside it’s a short uphill walk. Comfortable shoes are a good idea — the streets are cobbled.
Can I bring children?
Yes — the venue is family-friendly and the commented format actually works well for children who want to know what the songs are about. Children pay the same ticket price as adults.
Can I cancel my ticket?
Both GetYourGuide and Tiqets typically allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before the show. The exact policy appears at the checkout step on each platform — please double-check before completing the booking.
Which platform should I book on — GetYourGuide or Tiqets?
Either is fine. GetYourGuide has the larger review pool for this venue; Tiqets is direct and clean. Prices are the same on both. Pick whichever account you already have.
